Amsterdam has urban climate problems and these can be solved with many design interventions. In this project, we will develop a smart city app in which people can see what the actual local urban climate is like in their direct living environment and what they can do to improve it. The app and underlying information are developed by a team of climate responsive design specialist Sanda Lenzholzer, landscape architect Claire Oude Aarninkhof, urban climate specialists Gert-Jan Steeneveld and Natalie Theeuwes as well as web app creator Gert-Sterenborg. Together with stakeholders and citizens, the team works for one year.

Problem statement

Currently, Amsterdam faces adverse urban climate effects that need adaptation. For instance, urban heat can run up to of 6 C compared to rural surroundings, especially in hot summer nights. Also, the city has various places in which wind nuisance or danger occurs (e.g. the Zuidas). These problems lead to discomfort, danger and in the case of nocturnal heat to sleeping problems and lower work productivity.

Solution proposal

Measures to counteract urban climate problems often consist of small-scale interventions that add up, but also of larger scale urban planning strategies. For optimal achievements the municipality has to take actions, but also Amsterdam citizens need to modify their houses and gardens. To facilitate such actions and connect citizens, municipality and other organisations for joint efforts, we propose the CLIMADAPTOOL- a data system and smartphone smart city app. This smart city app shows urban climate high-resolution maps, indicating urban climate problems and potentials for improvement. Additionally, the CLIMADAPTOOL provides a recommendation map with location-specific interventions for urban climate improvement. To make these recommendations more tangible, there is also a digital catalogue where the interventions are described according to implementation, specific urban climate effects, multifunctionality, and costs. This tool will make the information to improve the urban climate easily accessible for everybody.

Outlook in the future

The upscaling of this project will be an extension and gamification of the tool enabling quantification and visualisation of the adaptation actions taken and enabling competition between neighbourhoods on who is the ‘fastest in adaptation’.
